Hidden Gems: Uncovering Underrated Bands in the Britpop Era
There were other Britpop bands besides big names, such as Pulp, Blur, Oasis, and Suede, which were arguably underrated. Although they were not as well-known as the Big Four, these bands have created good music that should have gotten more attention in the Britpop era.
The Boo Radleys
The Boo Radleys was formed in Wallasey in 1988 with Simon Sice Rowbottom as the frontman. The band became known in the Britpop scene after releasing the single Wake Up Boo!, which reached number 9 in the Top 10 UK Singles Chart in 1995, four years before they disbanded. Over the years of their career, they have made six studio albums, with their fourth Wake Up! being the most successful among others. The other albums, such as Giant Steps (1993) and C'mon Kids (1996), were also some of their fine works that reached the Top 20 Albums Chart in the UK in the 90s.
The Charlatans
The Charlatans was a band formed in the West Midlands in 1988. The band consisted of Tim Burgess as lead singer, Mark Collins as guitarist, Martin Blunt as bassist, and Tony Rogers as keyboardist. During their music career, the band had created some good works. Their most famous song was The Only One I Know, a song that might not be considered Britpop. However, their album titled The Charlatans (1995) was a part of the scene and even received quite a lot of attention in the Britpop era. Songs such as Just When You're Thinkin' Things Over and Crashin’ In were some of their works from the album that resonated with Britpop.
Gene
The band emerged in the Britpop scene in 1993. Originally from London with Martin Rossiter as lead singer, the band debuted two singles, For The Dead and Child Boy, which got recognition from the media– Single of the Week from NME and Single Of The Month from Select. The band rose to prominence after the release of the album Olympian (1995). It entered the UK Albums Chart and gained approximately 70,000 sales in the UK. Then, with the album Drawn To The Deep End (1997), they received critical acclaim following the success in the top 10 of the album chart. The tracks from the album, such as Where Are They Now? and Speak to Me Someone, reached the top 40 in the UK Singles Chart, which defined their success in the 90s.
