She Sang Britpop: Recognizing Female Voices in the Britpop Era

Female-fronted Bands
Male-fronted bands were very prominent in the ‘90s Britpop era. Names such as Blur, Pulp, Oasis, and Suede were popular during those years and dominated the music scene in the UK. As a result, female-fronted bands seemed to be overshadowed, making them hardly get more attention even though many of the bands were considered talented with their work and influential to the Britpop movement.

Elastica
Elastica was the first female-fronted Britpop band formed in 1992. Consisting of ex-Suede members, Justine Frischmann (lead vocalist) and Justin Welch (drummer), the band gained recognition after releasing the first single, Stutter (1993), and two following singles titled Line Up and Connection, which entered the UK Top 20 singles in 1994. Their debut album, Elastica (1995), topped the UK Albums Chart and became the fastest-selling debut album, bringing them immediate success. However, the success did not extend to their subsequent work. Their second album, The Menace (2000), was the opposite. The album was a failure critically and commercially due to its poor sales at that time.

Echobelly
Echobelly was founded by Sonya Madan and Glenn Johansson, the band's lyricist/lead vocals and guitarist. They formed the band in London in 1992 with the other members Alex Keyser as guitarist and Andy Henderson as drummer. During the Britpop era in the '90s, the band created three studio albums–Everyone's Got One (1994), On (1995), and Lustra (1997). Their debut and second albums were those of their work that reached the Top 10 UK Albums, becoming popular at that time. In 2001, four years after the hiatus, the band returned with three other albums–People Are Expensive (2001), Gravity Pulls (2004), and Anarchy and Alchemy (2017).

Sleeper
Sleeper was formed in Manchester in 1993. The band consisted of Louise Wener as lead singer/guitarist, Jon Stewart (guitarist), Diid Osman as bassist, and Andy Maclure as drummer. During their music career, Sleeper had produced three studio albums–Smart, The It Girl, and Pleased to Meet You. The three albums were considered commercially successful for reaching sales of over 100,000-300,000 copies. The tracks What Do I Do Now?, Nice Guy Eddie, Sale of the Century, and Statuesque from the album The It Girl reached the top 20 hit singles, becoming the band’s peak moment.
